In some of the reported cases, it was possible to obtain complete catalogues for the journals, thanks to the database <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/samizdatcollections.library.utoronto.ca\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">https:\/\/samizdatcollections.library.utoronto.ca\/.<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">In others, it was possible to consult the typescripts in archival collections as indicated in the bibliography at the end of the articles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/samizdat-unofficial-arts-en\/periodicals-samizdat-unofficial-arts-en\/\">Samizdat &gt; Periodicals<\/a> <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"none\">category<\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">also includes c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ollections and news reports<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which document a series of initiatives promoted by groups and the underground press. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For each p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">eriodical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the following information is provided: <\/span><em>Title, Date of first publication and final publication, Place of Publication, Editorial Board or Editors, Main Contributors, Total Number of Issues, Description, Notes<\/em>\u00a0(if any) <em>and Bibliography.<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\"> In addition, the years (and, where appropriate months) of the first and final publication are reported as they appear on the issues. If these differ from the actual years of publication, they have been inserted in square brackets.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the field\u00a0<\/span><em>Place of Publication<\/em><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the city or cities where the journal was published are reported. For the journals which indicate <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">redaktory\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(editors) the respective field\u00a0<\/span><em>Editors\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">has been<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">inserted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the field\u00a0<\/span><em>Main contributors<\/em><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">the<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">names of the most frequent authors are reported, and sometimes also those responsible for specific sections. If it was not possible to reconstruct the identity of the authors, we left the name and\/or the patronymic initials and\/or the pseudonym under which they appear in the pages of the journals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the\u00a0<\/span><em>Description\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">field we present: the history of the periodical, editorial trends, organization of contents, genres (essay, poetry, prose, translation, interviews), main editors, possible information on copyright, authors who collaborated and the most significant contributions from a historical-cultural point of view. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the field\u00a0<\/span><em>Notes<\/em><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">where present, reference is made to the primary source on which the website entry is based and any technical remarks on specific issues (typescripts, manuscripts, information on the availability of some issues). For journals which published only a few issues, the total number of pages of the issues has been indicated in the additional field <\/span><em>Total pages.\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the\u00a0<\/span><em>Bibliography\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">field there are the main bibliographic sources consulted for the preparation of the article, which are provided also for purposes of further investigation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Samizdat c<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">ollections and news reports published <\/span>from the end of the 1960s to the beginning of the 1980s<span data-contrast=\"none\">, a limited number of collections on historical, literary, and artistic topics are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">represented. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0They have been chosen for their relevance to this project. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Specifically, they are <em><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/khronika-tekushchikh-sobytii\/\">Kronika tekushchikh sobytii<\/a> <\/em><\/span><i><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Chronicle of Current Events) and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/pamiat-istoricheskii-sbornik\/\">Pamiat&#8217; <\/a><\/em><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Memory) for which we carried out comprehensive research using the paper and online archives of Memorial International (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"http:\/\/old.memo.ru\/history\/diss\/chr\/\">http:\/\/old.memo.ru\/history\/diss\/chr\/<\/a>) for <em>Kronika tekushchikh sobytii<\/em><\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">and<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span>(<span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memo.ru\/ru-ru\/events\/calendar\/160#list\">https:\/\/www.memo.ru\/ru-ru\/events\/calendar\/160#list<\/a>) for <em>Pamiat&#8217;.\u00a0<\/em> <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The following fields are shown for the collections and news reports: <\/span><em>Title,\u00a0Dates of\u00a0publication,\u00a0Place of publication,\u00a0Description,\u00a0Promoters,\u00a0Authors,\u00a0Total numbers,\u00a0Notes <\/em>(if any)<em>,\u00a0Bibliography. <\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0<\/span><em>Description\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">field presents, the history of the collections and reports (when and how they circulated), the events and topics that were given most attention, the authors who collaborated and the most important contributions from a historical-cultural point of view. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the field\u00a0<\/span><em>Promoters\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">we indicate the names of the figures who were responsible for creating and sustaining the collections and reports.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In the\u00a0<\/span><em>Authors\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">field, we give the names of contributors to the collections (in the case of news reports, there is no reference to the authors).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For the\u00a0<\/span><em>Notes\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><em>Bibliography\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">fields, the same criteria apply as for the journals. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">At the moment we have excluded literary works by authors of Russian modernism, whose texts in some cases were published in <em>tamizdat<\/em><\/span><em>\u00a0<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\">and, therefore, included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/la-ricezione-occidentale-del-dissenso-sovietico\/tamizdat\/\"><strong>&#8220;Tamizdat&#8221; <\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">section.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The fields here are\u00a0reported\u00a0as follows:\u00a0<\/span><em>Title,\u00a0Author,\u00a0Years of Editing,\u00a0Place of First\u00a0Publication,\u00a0Description,\u00a0Russian Language Editions,\u00a0Translations,\u00a0Bibliography,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Filmography<\/em><span data-contrast=\"none\"><em>,<\/em> when available.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second section <\/span><b>\u201cMusic &amp; Audio Texts\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dedicated to the vast and heterogeneous field of audio texts, also commonly called <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/samizdat-unofficial-arts-en\/magnitizdat-en\/\"><em>Magnitizdat<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a term adopted ex-post to indicate the clandestine dissemination of audio materials on magnetic media. The section is divided into several headings and related articles, which offer a general description of the phenomenon by documenting the methods used for recording, the performers and the content of their work. This section also provides information on reference materials, such as interviews with protagonists and those who participated in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnitizdat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third and last section of the <em>Samizdat<\/em> section, <\/span><b>&#8220;Visual &amp; Performing Arts&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contains a series of contributions focused on the visual arts and dissent, from photography to figurative arts, audio-visuals, and theatre.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second section <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/free-voices-in-the-soviet-context\/underground-places-groups\/\"><b>&#8220;Underground Places &amp; Groups&#8221;<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a map of the meeting points of unofficial culture and describes the main protagonists of the many collective manifestations of the underground.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u202f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It was decided to order the articles according to a geographical criterion, which takes into consideration first Moscow and Leningrad and extends to cover the whole territory of the Soviet Union. In this section we map out the most significant places of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/moscow-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Moscow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/leningrad-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Leningrad<\/a> underground (private flats, and public places such as squares and streets) and also various schools and groups which operated clandestinely in the two cities. The following fields have been included for private apartments: <\/span><em>Place, Key words used in place names<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (indicating the Russian lexemes used in the names of specific places), <\/span><em>Description<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (providing a brief history of the events that took place in the flats and the individuals involved), <\/span><em>Bibliography<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (providing bibliographical and in-depth information). The entries on squares and streets contain the following fields: <\/span><em>Dates<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (indicating the dates on which events and initiatives were organised)<em>, <\/em><\/span><em>Place, Participants, Publishing initiatives<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (linked to the foundation and distribution of journals and almanacs, if any), <\/span><em>Description<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (with a reconstruction of the history of the place, the events that took place and the participants) and <\/span><em>Bibliography<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entries concerning clandestine groups and schools that existed in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus and belonged to the so-called &#8216;Second Culture&#8217; (<em>Vtoraia kul&#8217;tura<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the period from the beginning of destalinization (1956) to the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991), are divided according to place (at the moment: <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/leningrad-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Leningrad<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/moscow-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Moscow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/kiev-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Kiev<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/underground-places-grups-en\/minsk-underground-places-groups-en\/\">Minsk<\/a>). These entries contain information both about groups that were self-defined through the writing of manifestos, and more fluid and difficult to trace groups. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For these entries the following fields are listed: <\/span><em>Dates<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Location<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Founders or promoters<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Members<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Editorial initiatives<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Description<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Bibliography<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>.<\/em> The field <\/span><em>Dates<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates the time frame within which the activity of the group can be circumscribed.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The field <\/span><em>Place<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates the city in which the group formed and operated. If the name of the place has changed, the Italian translation of the place name is given. In the <\/span><em>Founders or Promoters<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field the leading figures within the group are indicated, if any. In the field <\/span><em>Members<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the names of the actual members of the group are given. If the a number of members makes a complete list impossible, the main names are given. In the <\/span><em>Publishing initiatives<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field, the publishing activities of the group or of some of its members are indicated, whether they are occasional (the publication of anthologies and almanacs) or periodical (the publication of a journal). In the <\/span><em>Description<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section, the group&#8217;s activities are reconstructed, from its genesis to its consolidation as a circle of individuals with a common <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weltanschauung<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in some cases with a shared literary agenda. Reference is also made to the influences of each group, as well as its performative gestures, if relevant. In the <\/span><em>Bibliography<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field the main bibliographic sources consulted for the drafting of the articles are listed, which also provides information for further investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third section <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/free-voices-in-the-soviet-context\/facts-and-phenomena\/\"><b>&#8220;Facts &amp; Phenomena&#8221;<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrates the public dimension of clandestine culture in its various typological representations and is divided into the categories: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/facts-phenomena-en\/circles-seminars-conferences-en\/\">Circles, Seminars, Conferences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/facts-phenomena-en\/authorized-publications\/\">Authorized Publications<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/facts-phenomena-en\/human-rights-movment-en\/\">Human Rights Movement<\/a>, Open Letters, Trials, Meetings and Demonstrations, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/facts-phenomena-en\/exhibitions-en\/\">Exhibitions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/category\/facts-phenomena-en\/celebrations-en\/\">Celebrations<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>Concerts and festivals<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A specific section is devoted to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil Rights Movement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its activists. Other categories such as &#8220;<\/span>Open Letters<i>&#8220;<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;Meetings and <\/span>Demonstrations<i>&#8220;<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;<\/span>Trials<i>&#8220;<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explore the different forms of protest which took place following the trials of individuals who were linked in various ways to the world of dissent as <em>inakomyslie<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and not necessarily as dissidents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The criteria adopted within each category reflect the criteria commonly used for entries on individual people (as in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vocilibereurss.fupress.net\/en\/people\/\"><b>\u201cPeople\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), while for &#8220;Protest Letters&#8221; we use the criteria used for journals, with due specificity.
