“Domenica del Sole 24 Ore”, a Sunday insert of the economic daily newspaper “Sole 24 Ore” published in Milan, was founded on 4 December 1983, when the newspaper was under the direction of journalist and professor Gianni Locatelli. The purpose of the supplement was – and still is – to present cultural news on the day of the week the financial markets are closed.
Between 1983 and 1991 “Domenica” often published reviews and short articles by the Slavist Piero Sinatti, who was Moscow correspondent for “Sole 24 ore” and known for his translations of Varlam Shalamov and for publishing the Cronaca degli avvenimenti correnti (Chronicle of Current Events) (cf. Sinatti 1978) in Italian. Sinatti wrote on a range of literary and socio-historical topics, considering writers such as Iosif Brodskii and Shalamov, as well as scholars such as Vittorio Strada.
“Domenica” also printed articles on the realities of the gulag system, communism in the USSR’s satellite countries, perestroika and Yeltsin’s coup. Among those who contributed to the paper on these issues were Giuseppe Are and Gian Paolo Prandstraller (cf. Are 1985, Prandstraller 1986).
